Fall Colors Are Hues of Pink at SCJ

It’s October and “PINK” is the air. Well actually at SCJ Alliance we’re “pinkish” throughout the year, supporting various breast cancer prevention fundraisers.

A woman’s chance of having invasive breast cancer some time during her life is about 1 in 8. Other than skin cancer, it’s the most common cancer in America among women.

Earlier this month our SCJ Alliance team participated in the South Sound Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K in Tacoma. This was our team’s fifth year. We’ve had every sort of weather–from lovely fall sunshine to an absolute downpour and one year ice!

For the past few years, and again this year, we began our walk in the Theatre District and enjoyed a beautiful walk through the UW Tacoma campus and the Tacoma waterfront. Always an adventure!

To raise money and support  the cause, some of us walked in the event, others donated to those who did, others ate (for a premium price!) Collectively, the event raised $76,488.98 from the efforts of 156 teams and 1,086 participants.

Money raised goes to the fight to end breast cancer… through prevention efforts, free screenings, treatment and research to cure the disease.

Survival rates have been going up, likely the result of finding the cancer earlier, as well as better treatment. Right now there are more than 20.9 million breast cancer survivors in the United States alone.
