Streets & Arterials
We create complete streets – places where people want to walk, bike and drive. Successful roundabout/corridor designs have been developed for many challenging projects for clients at the local, state, and regional levels. Because of the hands-on approach that is part of the philosophy of SCJ, the resulting project deliverables consistently feature a strong level of quality assurance and quality control.
Highways & Interchanges
Creative, value-driven design of highways and interchanges are a hallmark of SCJ, as we seamlessly integrate transportation planning, design and environmental permitting services under one roof. With engineers and planners working side by side, our holistic concepts simultaneously maximize transportation operations and minimize environmental impacts. This integrated approach creates better solutions and saves you time and money through shortened design time and reduced construction costs.
Roundabouts
We’ve been doing roundabouts for a long time. SCJ’s Principal Engineer Perry Shea designed the first roundabout on a state route in Washington State. Since then our team has completed various stages of analysis, design, and/or construction for more than 50 roundabout intersections in the states of Washington, Oregon and Alaska.
Signals & Intersections
Signalized intersection or a roundabout? Which will best keep cars moving and people safe, and not break the bank to create or maintain? How long is too long to wait at an intersection and what are the trade offs? SCJ can provide the design options and data needed for your community to make these decisions. There are more than 300 signal systems and 50 roundabout intersections in the Pacific Northwest that have been developed by SCJ.
Streetscape
Good streetscape design isn’t about balancing functionality versus aesthetics; it is about enhancing the experience for all users. SCJ has traffic engineers, urban planners, landscape architects and transportation designers who all work together to create streetscapes that serve vehicle traffic, bicycles and pedestrians and provide access, circulation and visibility for businesses.
ADA Facilities
ADA requirements are a key part of many street and sidewalk improvements. The constraints of the built environment and the tight tolerances of ADA standards make these designs extremely challenging. SCJ engineers have been helping municipal clients find just the right approach to upgrading ADA facilities and can bring this experience and expertise to your project.
Trails & Sidewalks
Trail design is an art, and it begins at the planning stage as connections, alignment and desired aesthetic qualities are identified. Our team brings together engineering design, GIS analysis, landscape architecture and urban planning to create a design that is functional, fits your community and constructable, within your budget.
