SCJ worked closely with the City of Delta Parks Department and Public Works to design the City’s Veterans Community Park. The goal for the park was to create a place for veterans to gather with their family and friends, providing spaces for quiet reflection, small gatherings, and significant events on special occasions such as Memorial Day. SCJ led a public engagement process that allowed local veterans in the community to participate in the design process and influence the final program and layout of the park. The park’s design includes a sizeable multi-functional pavilion with an elevated stage. A gently sloped lawn provides additional seating for significant events. On axis with the pavilion is the main memorial area, which includes monuments for each military branch, a central sculptural element, and formal landscaping in a meditative labyrinth-like layout. The design also incorporates a picnic area with integrated nature play to provide a multi-generational space for veteran families to gather. Additional design elements include a sinuous seat wall that retains grade while providing places to rest when walking through the park, a mural wall, a gateway feature, vegetative screening along major roads, a new parking area, improved drainage and utilities, lighting, and locally sourced materials such as brick pavers and marble blocks.
