SCJ assisted the Town of Crested Butte in leading the renovation of Totem Pole Park, a small but significant community space located at Maroon Avenue and 3rd Street in the heart of Crested Butte, along the banks of Coal Creek. The project goals included enhancing the park’s functionality, aesthetics, and year-round usability while addressing existing site challenges. The renovation consists of the thoughtful layout and design of key park elements such as pedestrian walkways, site furniture, and snow storage areas to improve circulation and seasonal adaptability. The planting design spotlights native perennials to reflect the regional landscape and support ecological health. In addition, SCJ prepared a conceptual grading plan to improve drainage and topography. SCJ’s scope of services included a site visit and conditions assessment, preparation of a full landscape design set with site plans, planting details, and material specifications, and coordination with Town staff throughout the design process. We also helped the Town host an on-site community outreach meeting. Through a collaborative and context-sensitive design approach, SCJ helped transform Totem Pole Park into a more inviting, resilient, and well-loved public space for residents and visitors alike.
