As part of ongoing remediation efforts related to the Superfund cleanup of the historic Washoe Smelter in Anaconda-Deer Lodge County, the County contacted SCJ to help plan for future habitat and recreational use on restored lands. Over 5,000 acres may be turned over to the County in the coming years. SCJ completed the Open Lands Plan to guide the County’s efforts to open these lands for recreational use. Feedback received through our community outreach showed a heavy demand for mountain biking, hiking, and motocross. Connectivity between existing trails and the newly opened lands will be a key factor in allowing and separating motorized use from pedestrian and mountain bike use. The final plan featuring new trails, connections, interpretive elements, and habitat restoration areas was released in February 2024. SCJ and ADLC earned an Idaho-Montana ASLA Analysis and Planning Award of Honor. The Open Lands Plan was later cited in NRDP’s February 2025 Amendment for the Anaconda Uplands Restoration.
