Ike Kinswa State Park is a popular 421-acre camping destination in southwest Washington, attracting over 200,000 visitors annually to its forested setting of fir, cedar, and cottonwood trees. Among its amenities, a looped RV camping area with 41 secluded sites had fallen behind in meeting modern recreational vehicles’ size and utility needs. The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission (WSPRC) engaged SCJ to evaluate current conditions and create a strategic action plan to address this.

SCJ utilized advanced techniques, such as directional boring and pipe bursting, to upgrade utility access at each RV site with minimal disturbance to the surrounding trees and root systems. By implementing a refined set of Best Management Practices (BMPs), SCJ could preserve hundreds of mature trees while ensuring the safe installation of upgraded water, sewer, and communication conduits. These BMPs guided every construction phase, from precise excavation around root zones to controlled access routes within the site. Additionally, two RV sites were widened and regraded to enhance ADA accessibility. Construction activities were meticulously coordinated within a constrained timeframe to minimize park closures and visitor disruptions. SCJ’s approach balanced the need for modernized amenities with a commitment to preserving the natural character of this heavily treed area, ensuring the park remains a beloved destination for years to come.
