SCJ was on the consultant team that designed and built the I-5, Berkeley Street/ Jackson Avenue Interchange (Exit 122) as part of the I-5, Mounts Road to Thorne Lane Corridor Improvements Project, which widens I-5 through Joint Base Lewis- McChord (JBLM). SCJ designed the reconfigured interchange as a dogbone roundabout, providing grade separation over the railroad right of way west of I-5. We worked with WSDOT to locate the bridge south of the existing crossing to minimize impacts to the City of Lakewood and JBLM during construction and prepared 30% concept plans used in the design-build RFP. The new interchange required rebuilding the Approach Zone to JBLM’s Madigan Access Control Point (ACP) to accommodate the grade separation. SCJ coordinated with JBLM and the Army Corps Center of Standardization, Omaha, to deliver 100% plans meeting current military security requirements. SCJ also worked with the City of Lakewood and the Washington National Guard to modify the CVI entrance at Berkeley Street and Union Avenue. To address right of way constraints, we created an asymmetrical egg-shaped roundabout that accommodated Camp Murray’s design vehicles and security needs.
