The town of Dover has considered implementing a cable car system for a number of years. The town is home to one of the busiest passenger ports in Europe, the historic Dover Castle, and close to the iconic White Cliffs. Implementing a cable car in Dover would drive tourism to the Town and Castle and allow for optimization of parking in the area.
For the recent project, SCJ studied the potential for connecting the Town of Dover to the Dover Castle, which rests above the town. The project was initiated with stakeholder outreach. Several key partners and interested parties were consulted. The technical work included conceptualizing and evaluating many cable car alignments, the design of conceptual cable car stations, and an evaluation of multiple cable car technologies. A business case study was prepared based on the cable car system developed in the technical phase. The preliminary financial assessment included estimates of ridership, revenue generation, and costs.
