SCJ staff teamed up with ID Sculpture to develop a park master plan for the renovation and improvement of Charmar Park in the City of Gunnison. The existing neighborhood park was underutilized, but it had the potential to become a vibrant park within the City’s recreation system. Ample space around the playground allowed us to keep the existing play equipment and add exciting new features, including climbing boulders and a timber climbing structure. Park paths around these playground elements also become part of the play features, creating loops for kids to run and/or bike. Pockets of “nature play” features are included in the design to help connect park visitors to the adjacent natural drainage area. These include stepping stumps, logs, and natural boulders for exploring, climbing, and sitting. Access to the existing drainage provides another opportunity for play and connecting to nature. The increased demand for pickleball courts is also addressed in this master plan. Five new courts are included directly adjacent to the existing tennis courts, creating a lively court complex for this increasingly popular sport.
