Tacoma Community College (TCC) is a growing campus, striving to provide students with state-of-the-art classroom instruction. With the goal of creating a cutting-edge learning environment, TCC set about constructing a 70,000 square foot Health Careers Center to provide instruction in nursing and other health-related fields.

The college’s master plan, developed previously with SCJ’s assistance, had revealed onsite campus infrastructure systems were failing, so it was unclear how the new facility would be served with water, sewer and stormwater. SCJ was the civil design lead for the Health Center and set about performing a site utility assessment.

The evaluation included determining the location and sizes of existing utilities; what existing campus infrastructure, if any, could be used to serve the new project; and the capacity needs of the new building, and a future one. The SCJ team also coordinated with the local utility district to develop system models and establish design parameters. This Health Careers Center, and its future growth, will be well served with the new systems that were designed and constructed.

When all was said and done, this project earned a LEED Gold level certification.

STAFF STORY

“I relished the whole process…planning, design, and construction. Working with a top-notch architect, NBBJ, was inspiring, plus I enjoyed the collaboration with Tacoma Community College, other consultants, and the contractor. It was rewarding to see a portion of campus with an outdated building transition to a beautiful state-of-the-art health career center, and I am proud to be a part of it.”
