INVOLVEMENT
2013

An attractive and walkable downtown that better serves businesses, pedestrians, and vehicle traffic, is the result of the Chelan’s new Downtown Master Plan. SCJ staff prepared the transportation elements, which led to street improvements like wider sidewalks and improved pedestrian crossings, RRFB’s, better lighting, enhanced landscaping and decorative stamped concrete accents.

The plan also included trail and other non-motorized connections throughout downtown, parking analysis and gateway improvements on the key corridor through town (SR 150). The travel lanes were reconfigured to provide a landscaped median and locations to showcase public art. SCJ staff provided critical expertise to coordinate funding requirements, city council parking concerns and WSDOT geometric requirements.

CLIENT TESTIMONIAL

“These downtown improvements (street upgrades) are going to bring benefits that will pay economic and environmental dividends for years to come.”

STAFF STORY

“The project required extensive work with City Staff, volunteer City committees, downtown business groups, freight movement issues, and WSDOT whose project outcomes and goals were not the same and sometimes in direct opposition. Many issues had to be worked out and compromises made in order to develop a project within available funding limitations while still meeting applicable design standards.”
