Poor traffic circulation at Centennial Elementary School had the inherent risk of vehicle and pedestrian accidents, traffic queueing issues, conflicts with bus drop-off, and long delays for student pick-up and drop-off. SCJ was able to identify the roots of the problem and provide safe, cost-effective solutions that alleviated traffic congestion, provided safer pedestrian passage, and eliminated conflicts with buses.

SCJ, in providing civil engineering and traffic planning services, worked closely with the School District, Thurston County and the contractor in identifying solutions, providing permit drawings, and constructing the improvements so all could be completed before school started.

STAFF STORY

“Tim Byrne came into our office in early August to review the conceptual traffic improvements that we prepared. At the meeting we selected the best circulation plan and then he expressed his desire to have it designed, permitted, and constructed prior to school starting in one month. SCJ was able to prepare the construction documents in one week and the County approved the plans after the second week. Two weeks later the selected contractor was able to mobilize and construct the improvements prior to school starting. This project was a testament to what we can accomplish in a short amount of time with collaboration from the client, jurisdiction, and the contractor.”
